CORESO factsheet: Facilitation

What is it?

Facilitation is a technique mostly used to implement collective intelligence techniques. This new profession has been created to moderate and supervise groups in a neutral way with specific rules. The role of the facilitator is to support a discussion group in order to highlight the potential and intelligence of each participant. Facilitators ensure that the discussion is not biased towards the opinion of a few extroverted participants.

Why should we use it?

Facilitation is key to create collective intelligence. It helps to meet participants with different professions, hierarchical level, gender and age to feel safe to express their opinion and get more engaged in internal and external projects.

Where can we use it?

Some employees want to be more engaged and feel part of the company. They are essential because they are in the field and they observe current situations and can instantaneously provide feedback. They have ideas but sometimes they don’t know how to share them at a superior level. Facilitation is key to promote inclusion and let participants express their opinion or ideas. In the public sector the groups of stakeholders can be very heterogeneous and the role of the facilitation is to give everybody a voice and promote collective intelligence through an appreciation of heterogeneity of opinions and visions.
